Williams: There’s so much out there for me. I went to [Cynthia]’s studio and spent time with her. One thing that was very touching for me was [everything was in her studio]. You see her just graduated from art school and then see this progression as she is thinking and figuring out how to get where she is now. And it made me think about how many hours she spent and how many failures she endured: how many failures are inherent in the artistic creation process. And she got up and sat at the table. And she’s still sitting at the table. That really destroys me, it clears me up when I think about it. Because it’s so lonely. And especially when you don’t know how far this work will go beyond you and your group of friends. But in the end, she kept showing up at the table for herself. It’s a place where you have control. Our friendships, our family relationships, we can’t control them. We cannot be above them. And there’s something about working with clay—it’s a place where she feels comfortable being. When I see Cynthia working and see how fast her movements are now and how fast these girls are – that’s what she calls them, “girls” – they suddenly come to life. how quickly, with a quick gesture of her hand, that this thing is breathing in front of you… feels like a moment of birth.
